Methodology

Figures are compiled from the public FMCSA Company Census (motor carrier registration records), counting entities whose registration was added within the reporting window. “For-hire carriers” are interstate US carriers classified Authorized/Exempt For Hire, excluding passenger operators. Brokers and freight forwarders are identified by FMCSA operation classification. Registration counts reflect new FMCSA filings, not net trucks added to the road — the industry sees heavy turnover.
