Auto Shipping Cost Estimator
Explore typical pricing ranges for vehicle transport across the U.S. Then compare real offers from the licensed auto transport companies we work with.
How Auto Transport Pricing Works
Auto shipping costs aren't one-size-fits-all. Unlike a flat-rate service, vehicle transport pricing depends on distance, vehicle dimensions, transport type, seasonal demand, and route popularity. That's why the ranges below are estimates — useful for budgeting, but not a substitute for real carrier quotes. Through American Auto Shipping, licensed auto transport companies make their own offers on your specific shipment and you choose among them.
Think of it like airfare: a flight from New York to Los Angeles costs differently in July than it does in February, and booking early saves money. The same principles apply to auto transport. Every range below is produced by the formula on our How We Estimate page from public data — road distance, this week's EIA diesel price, the season, and the vehicle and trailer type — with nothing adjusted by hand.

Distance-Based Pricing Ranges
Estimated costs for a standard sedan on an open carrier
Distance is the single biggest factor in auto shipping costs. Longer hauls cost more in total but less per mile — carriers are more efficient on interstate runs where they can fill every slot on the trailer. Short-distance shipments under 500 miles carry a higher per-mile rate because of the fixed costs of loading, dispatching, and delivery logistics.
| Road distance | Open carrier | Enclosed carrier | Per mile (open, mid-point) | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 mi | $380 – $590 | $570 – $890 | $3.27 | 2–3 days |
| 500 mi | $710 – $960 | $1,070 – $1,450 | $1.68 | 2–4 days |
| 1,000 mi | $970 – $1,320 | $1,460 – $1,980 | $1.15 | 3–5 days |
| 1,500 mi | $1,140 – $1,540 | $1,710 – $2,310 | $0.89 | 4–7 days |
| 2,000 mi | $1,310 – $1,770 | $1,960 – $2,650 | $0.77 | 5–8 days |
| 2,500 mi | $1,450 – $1,960 | $2,170 – $2,940 | $0.68 | 6–10 days |
Standard sedan, metro pickup and delivery, no strong north-south direction. Larger vehicles, rural addresses and peak-season months are higher; see the tables below.

How Vehicle Type Affects Shipping Cost
Larger and heavier vehicles cost more to transport
Your vehicle's size and weight directly impact the price carriers charge. A compact sedan takes up less trailer space and weighs less than a full-size pickup truck, so the carrier can fit more vehicles on a load. Oversized vehicles like lifted trucks, large SUVs, and vans may require special positioning on the trailer.
| Vehicle class | Multiplier | Open carrier, 1,000 mi | Enclosed carrier, 1,000 mi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan / coupe | +0% | $970 – $1,320 | $1,460 – $1,980 |
| SUV / crossover | +12% | $1,090 – $1,470 | $1,640 – $2,210 |
| Pickup / large SUV | +25% | $1,220 – $1,650 | $1,830 – $2,470 |
| Van / minivan | +20% | $1,170 – $1,580 | $1,750 – $2,370 |
| Oversize / modified | +50% | $1,460 – $1,980 | $2,190 – $2,960 |
Non-running vehicles add +20% because the carrier needs a winch or forklift. Motorcycles and boats are priced on different equipment and are not covered by this formula.

Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport
Choosing the right transport method for your vehicle and budget
About 85% of vehicles are shipped on open carriers. It's the standard, most affordable option — and perfectly safe for everyday vehicles. Enclosed transport makes sense for high-value, classic, or exotic vehicles where full weather and road debris protection justifies the premium.
| Factor | Open Transport | Enclosed Transport |
|---|---|---|
| Estimate (1,000 mi sedan, October) | $970 – $1,320 | $1,460 – $1,980 |
| Price Premium | Baseline | +50% in our formula |
| Weather Protection | Exposed to elements | Fully enclosed |
| Road Debris Protection | Minimal | Full protection |
| Carrier Availability | High — fastest pickup | Limited — may wait longer |
| Vehicles Per Load | 8 – 10 | 2 – 7 |
| Best For | Standard daily drivers | Luxury, classic, exotic vehicles |

Seasonal Pricing Patterns
When you ship matters almost as much as where
Auto transport demand follows predictable seasonal cycles. Snowbirds heading south in fall and north in spring, summer relocations, and holiday buying seasons all create surges that push prices up. In our season table the spread between the cheapest and the busiest month is 17% on a route with no strong north-south direction, and wider on snowbird lanes.
| Month | Southbound | Northbound | No strong direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | -8% | -8% | -8% |
| February | +0% | +0% | +0% |
| March | +0% | +0% | +0% |
| April | -5% | +15% | +5% |
| May | -5% | +15% | +5% |
| June | +8% | +8% | +8% |
| July | +8% | +8% | +8% |
| August | +8% | +8% | +8% |
| September | +0% | +0% | +0% |
| October (now) | +15% | -5% | +5% |
| November | +15% | -5% | +5% |
| December | -8% | -8% | -8% |
* Southbound means the delivery point is more than 3 degrees of latitude south of the pickup; northbound the reverse. Snowbird routes (Northeast ↔ Florida, Midwest ↔ Arizona) are where the direction columns matter most. Multipliers are our own estimates of the documented pattern; see how we estimate.
Other Factors That Affect Your Shipping Cost
Beyond distance, vehicle type, transport method, and season, several other variables influence the final price carriers quote:
Vehicle Condition
Inoperable vehicles are estimated at +20% because they require a winch or forklift to load onto the carrier. Vehicles with flat tires, dead batteries, or non-functional steering all fall into this category.
Pickup & Delivery Location
Major metro areas along popular corridors have the most carrier traffic and the lowest rates. A rural pickup or delivery ZIP (under 1,000 people per square mile) adds +10% in our formula because the carrier has to detour from their primary route. Terminal-to-terminal shipping can sometimes reduce costs compared to door-to-door delivery.
Expedited Shipping
Need your vehicle picked up within 24–48 hours? Expedited service is estimated at +20% over standard shipping. Planning ahead and booking 2–3 weeks before your preferred date is the single best way to keep costs down.
Fuel Prices & Route Demand
Carrier operating costs rise and fall with diesel prices; our estimates move with the EIA weekly national average (this week $6.20/gal against a 52-week average of $4.73). High-volume routes like California to Florida have more carrier options and competitive pricing. Less traveled corridors may draw fewer offers, which can push prices higher.
How to Get the Best Rate
American Auto Shipping works differently than a single shipping company. Instead of getting one quote from one company, your shipment goes to several licensed auto transport companies we are a disclosed agent for, and they compete for your business with their own offers. Here are some additional tips to maximize your savings:
Book Early
Submitting your quote request 2–3 weeks before your preferred pickup date gives carriers time to plan their routes and offer you better pricing. Last-minute bookings limit carrier options and usually cost more.
Be Flexible on Dates
A pickup window of 3–5 days instead of a single fixed date dramatically increases the number of carriers who can accommodate your shipment, which drives more competing offers.
Choose Open Transport
Unless you're shipping a luxury, classic, or exotic vehicle, open transport is the most cost-effective option. Over 85% of vehicles are shipped this way safely and affordably.
Ship in Off-Peak Months
November through February offers the lowest demand and the best rates. If your timeline is flexible, shipping during these months is 17% below peak summer in our season table.
Let Carriers Compete
We put your shipment in front of licensed auto transport companies who bid against each other. You compare real offers, read carrier reviews, and choose the best combination of price and reputation — no pressure, no obligation.
Auto Shipping Cost FAQ
Auto transport pricing depends on distance, vehicle size and weight, transport type (open vs enclosed), seasonal demand, route popularity, and whether your vehicle is operable. Because so many variables factor in, two seemingly similar shipments can differ by hundreds of dollars. The ranges on this page come from one published formula using public data; the price you actually pay comes from the licensed auto transport company you choose.
In our season table, December and January carry the lowest multiplier and June through August the highest, a 17% spread on a route with no strong north-south direction. Snowbird lanes swing more: southbound trips cost most in October and November, northbound trips in April and May.
For a 2,500-mile road trip in October, the formula gives $1,450 – $1,960 for a standard sedan on an open carrier, with diesel at $6.20 a gallon. SUVs and pickups run +12% to +25% higher and enclosed transport adds +50%. These are estimates, not quotes.
No. Every range on this page is produced automatically by the formula published on our How We Estimate page, from public data: road distance, the EIA weekly diesel price, the season, and the vehicle and trailer type. Nothing is adjusted by hand. Your price is set by the licensed auto transport company you choose; American Auto Shipping is a disclosed agent for those companies and does not set or collect it.
Book 2-3 weeks in advance, choose open transport, be flexible on pickup dates, and ship in the lower-demand months shown in the season table. Then compare offers from more than one licensed company before you book.
