Vehicle Shipping Tips & Information

Every vehicle type has its own considerations when it comes to auto transport. Use our expert tips to prepare your vehicle for a smooth shipping experience.

Shipping Tips by Vehicle Type

Prepare your vehicle properly to ensure a damage-free transport experience

Sedans & Compact Cars

  • Sedans are the easiest and most affordable vehicles to ship due to standard dimensions
  • Open transport is ideal for most sedans — enclosed is rarely needed unless the vehicle is high-value
  • Remove aftermarket spoilers or lip kits that sit lower than factory ground clearance
  • Fold in side mirrors to prevent damage during loading and transit
  • Ensure tire pressure is at recommended levels for safe loading onto the carrier

SUVs & Crossovers

  • Standard SUVs fit on most open carriers, but full-size models (Suburban, Expedition) take extra space
  • Roof racks, cargo boxes, and crossbars should be removed before shipping
  • Running boards and side steps are generally fine to leave on
  • Larger SUVs may cost 10-20% more due to increased weight and space requirements
  • Four-wheel-drive SUVs should have the transfer case in neutral or as recommended by the manufacturer

Trucks & Pickups

  • Standard pickups (F-150, Silverado) ship easily on open carriers at competitive rates
  • Lifted trucks over 7 feet tall may not fit on standard carriers — flatbed transport may be required
  • Remove tonneau covers, bed accessories, and toolboxes before shipping
  • Dual-rear-wheel (dually) trucks require wider spacing and may cost more
  • Secure any loose items in the truck bed — carriers are not responsible for unsecured cargo

Luxury Vehicles

  • Enclosed transport is strongly recommended for vehicles valued over $75,000
  • Document all existing scratches, chips, and dents with photos before pickup
  • Disable aftermarket alarm systems that could drain the battery or trigger during transit
  • Consider removing custom wheels and shipping them separately if they are extremely valuable
  • Request a carrier with soft tie-down straps and wheel nets rather than chain tie-downs

Classic & Vintage Cars

  • Always use enclosed transport — road debris and weather exposure can damage irreplaceable finishes
  • Non-running classics can be shipped with winch-equipped carriers for safe loading
  • Inform your broker about any mechanical issues, leaks, or conditions that affect loading
  • Ensure the vehicle has enough brake fluid and the parking brake works for secure tie-down
  • Take detailed photographs of every panel, chrome piece, and interior surface before shipping

Electric & Hybrid Vehicles

  • Charge the battery to 50-80% — enough for loading and unloading but not fully charged for safety
  • Disable any automated features like self-parking, auto-pilot, or sentry mode during transport
  • Inform the carrier about any special handling requirements for your specific EV model
  • Tesla vehicles should have transport mode enabled to prevent air suspension changes
  • Electric vehicles ship the same as gas vehicles — no special permits or hazmat classification needed

General Preparation Checklist

Follow these steps regardless of your vehicle type

Before Pickup

  • Remove all personal belongings from the vehicle
  • Wash the exterior so existing damage is visible
  • Keep fuel level at about 1/4 tank
  • Check that the battery is charged and tires inflated
  • Note and photograph any existing damage

During Transport

  • Your vehicle is fully insured by the carrier
  • A condition report is completed at pickup
  • Track your shipment through your concierge
  • The carrier will contact you before delivery
  • No personal items are covered by carrier insurance
