San Francisco, California is a consolidated city-county in the U.S. State of California, and currently ranks as the fourth-largest city in the state with a population of over 837,000 residents. The city also ranks 13th in the entire United States in terms of population. The city of San Francisco was founded as a mission in 1776, but remained relatively small and was primarily a farming community in the bay area. The California Gold Rush brought many new residents to the city, causing rapid expansion over the course of about a decade.
San Francisco was, at one point, the largest city on the west coast and much larger than Los Angeles; tragically, In 1906, a fire destroyed over a third of the city, caused by a catastrophic earthquake. Over 400,000 people were homeless after the great earthquake and fire, but reconstruction proceeded at an incredible pace; much of it was because shipping had been diverted to Los Angeles, and a number of displaced San Francisco residents fled south, causing Los Angeles to overtake San Francisco as the largest city in California.
The city, with its Mediterranean climate, enjoys sunshine almost year-round as well as mild temperatures. The city is known for its incredibly foggy mornings, typically due to the ocean (which it borders). Its highs are around 70 in the summer and mid-50’s in the winter, while lows rarely dip below 45-50 degrees. The city’s Chinatown is one of the oldest and most well-known areas in the entire United States, and the city and its inhabitants enjoy a very high standard of living.
