Parkersburg is a city in and the county seat of Wood County, West Virginia, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 33,000. It is the third largest city in the state and is the primary city of the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna Metropolitan Statistical Area.

It was originally known as Newport, though during the American Revolution was renamed after Alexander Parker due to his heroic actions during fighting near the town. The name change wasn’t official until 1810 and in 1857 the railroad finally came to the town, helping it grow much faster as people made their way to the city.
