How to be a Good Auto Transport Customer
Let’s face it – shipping a car can be stressful, especially if it’s your only one. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be a good auto transport customer in the face of all that.
And for the most part, customers are perfectly reasonable people who understand that shipping a vehicle takes time and money and it’s not necessarily easy. Most people understand that things can happen and that nobody is perfect.
But I’ve been in the industry for over a decade at this point, and I’ve seen it all. I’ve talked to thousands of customers in my time, and 99% are great. But that 1% can be really, really nasty.
How can you avoid being in that 1%? Read on and find out.
How to be a good auto transport customer
Be as polite as possible
Politeness gets you far in life. But it seems that some people missed that memo. Remember, auto transport representatives are still working customer service. They are doing their best to meet your needs and ship your vehicle on time and on budget. Many things that customers get upset about aren’t actually in control of the rep as well. Damage to a vehicle, late pickup or delivery, the carrier breaking down – these are things that we have no control over. Be polite.
Always be available
In a world where the vast majority of the population has a cell phone, it should not be difficult to get a hold of you. Make sure to keep yourself available, even if that means just having your phone on you. Representatives – especially ours – try hard to keep our customers in the loop whenever something changes with their order. Being able to get a hold of you to let you know makes their job easier and makes your shipping services better. So be available in case we (or the driver) needs to get a hold of you.
Be flexible
When things don’t go according to plan is when most customers get upset. And that’s entirely understandable – when plans change it can get frustrating. But when you’re shipping a car you have to understand that things move at their own pace and in their own ways. Pickup dates, transit times, and delivery dates are all estimated. Carriers can’t account for traffic or mechanical issues. So if you’re flexible, and willing to work with your shippers, it’s going to make your shipment a lot better in the long run.
Be flexible, be available, and be polite. Those three things will immediately make your shipment better.
