Car Shipping to Fargo, North Dakota

Fargo 2Fargo is a city in as well as the county seat of Cass County, in the U.S. state of North Dakota. Fargo is the largest city in the state and is home to over 113,600 residents – that’s roughly 16% of North Dakota’s total population. Founded in 1871 as Centralia, the city was a major stop along the Red River during the height of the steamboat era. By 1881, the railroad had come to Centralia and the city was renamed after Wells Fargo founder William Fargo. The railroads brought an influx of residents and businesses, and for a time Fargo became the Gateway to the West. A small manufacturing and distribution center, Fargo exploded after World War II and has continued to grow slowly but steadily since.

Fargo is a twin city of Moorhead, Minnesota, and anchors the Fargo-Moorhead, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, the largest in the area and home to several major suburbs including Dilworth, Minnesota and West Fargo, North Dakota. The metro area is home to over 224,000 residents, which may not make it large in the eyes of some auto transport companies but it still has a pretty large population, all things considered. Fargo is located in North Dakota, though, which means that auto shippers are going to have to charge more for routes that run through it. This is due to the state’s low population count, as well as a general lack of customer interest in shipping to or from many areas of the state. Luckily, as the largest city, Fargo tends to be the cheapest area in the state to ship a vehicle to or from.

The two main interstate highways that run through Fargo are I-94 and I-29, which run east-west and north-south, respectively. Neither is incredibly popular among auto shipping companies because of the cities that they run through, though they are still easily accessible by most shippers and as such do see some auto transportation traffic. Auto transport companies want to run routes into and out of major cities and metro areas that sit along major interstates; while Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota, and sits along a coast-to-coast interstate, the city itself is not “major” in any real sense of the word, though as one of the largest cities in the region it attracts more carriers than places that are off the beaten path – especially in North Dakota, one of the least popular areas in the state to ship to and from.

Another reason why shippers don’t necessarily like North Dakota is the fact that the weather can be pretty brutal. Tornadoes are not unheard of, and winter storms can leave entire routes closed to traffic due to snow and ice. During the spring and summer tends to be the best time to ship, as demand for auto transport services across the nation increase and it becomes easier for car shippers to run less-profitable routes as a result. Cities in North Dakota tend to rank high on the list of least-profitable routes due to the weather during the fall and winter, general lack of major cities and therefore lack of demand among customers. If few customers are shipping into or out of an area, fewer carriers are going to service that area, and Fargo happens to be one of those areas.
