Lacey is a city located in Thurston County, in the U.S. state of Washington. It is currently home to a population of over 45,400 residents, and is a part of the Olympia, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which spans all of Thurston County and is home to over 252,200. Lacey was first founded back in 1853 and was originally known as Woodland; however, when local leaders applied for a post office in 1891, it was rejected, because there was already a Woodland in the area. The name was changed to Lacey and the city grew into primarily an agricultural area. World War II sparked a boom in the northwest, and Lacey quickly transformed into a retail and shopping area on the outskirts of the Seattle metro region. Incorporated in 1966, Lacey today is a bustling suburb of Olympia.
