Watauga is a city located in Tarrant County, Texas, and is currently home to over 23,500 residents. The city was first founded in 1843 and was originally comprised primarily of farmland, with most residents pursuing agricultural success at the time. Growth remained slow until the Texas and Pacific Railway brought a new line through the area in 1881, which helped spark communal growth and development and also the rise of new businesses that were outside the norm for Watauga residents at the time. After the railroad station closed during the Great Depression, Watauga’s population suffered incredibly, and was recorded at just 65 in 1940. The defense industry came to the town’s rescue during the 1950’s and 60’s, building new plants in the area and helping stimulate economic and commercial growth. Today, Watauga is another bedroom city of Fort Worth, sitting just on the outskirts of one of the principal cities of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Like most areas of Tarrant County, Watauga has no public transportation system linking it to the rest of the metro area, which probably hurts its growth.
