Petersburg is a city in as well as the county seat of Menard County, in the U.S. state of Illinois. Home to a population of about 2,200 residents, Petersburg is a small county seat but a county seat nonetheless. It was first founded in the early 1830’s and Abraham Lincoln – the 16th president of the United States, no less – was the man who plotted the initial town back in 1833. Petersburg grew into a small shipping hub in the region and a producer of agricultural products. Over time farming resulted in the silting of the Sangamon River near Petersburg, rendering it impassible for most commercial ships. This led to the decline of shipping trade, which has hurt the city in recent years, if only a little bit.
