South Dakota is a state located in the upper Midwest region of the United States, just south of North Dakota. It is home to a population of over 865,400 residents, making it the 46th largest state by population in the country.
This lack of population makes the state less popular of an auto transport location, and South Dakota auto transport services suffer as a result. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to ship a car to the state, not by any means. It just means that carriers are probably going to want a bit more in compensation to actually go there in the first place.
A bit about South Dakota auto transport
There are only a handful of cities in South Dakota, and of those only Sioux Falls and Rapid City really see any major demand from customers. This can make it difficult to ship a car to South Dakota on a budget, or if you’re pressed for time. Luckily, both of those cities sit right along a major interstate, I-90. I-90 is a major east-west interstate highway through the northern parts of the United States.
Unfortunately, South Dakota – and I-90 – still aren’t all that popular of auto shipping locations, and this can make it more difficult to find a carrier at a reasonable price. It helps if you’re shipping from the east or west, of course, especially if your pickup or delivery location outside of South Dakota sits along I-90.
That being said, it won’t be impossible – just expect it to take a bit longer and also to cost a bit more than more conventional shipping locations. Of course, Sioux Falls and Rapid City tend to be the cheapest cities in South Dakota to ship from or to. And this is because most of South Dakota is rural.

Rural South Dakota auto transport services are the majority of what we see in the industry today. At least, when it comes to shipping a car to South Dakota, that is. Like with most states, the majority of South Dakota is decidedly rural. If your pickup or delivery location is a rural area in the state, talk to your agent.
With few interstate highways – and a low population density – South Dakota isn’t a popular shipping location for carriers. So they have to charge more if they’re going to go off the beaten path. You can save some money by moving your pickup or delivery location to a bigger city, but again, speak to an agent about it.
