Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes region of the United States. It is home to a population of over 9.9 million residents and ranks tenth among the fifty states in total population. It spans 96,716 square miles as well, which ranks 11th among the states in total area.
Though settlement of the Michigan area by European settlers dates back to the 1760’s, Michigan would not see any significant growth in terms of population until it was established as a U.S. territory in 1805. It was admitted to the Union as a state in 1837 and quickly grew to prominence thanks to its proximity to the Great Lakes, which helped cities like Detroit grow into industrial powerhouses. Though in recent decades economic downtown has been severe, Michigan is slowly weathering the storm and on the road to recovery.
