Des Moines is the most populous city and the capital of the state of Iowa, with a population of just under 200,000. The city is named after the Des Moines River, which flows through it, and is a major center for the insurance industry, with industry magnates such as the Principal Financial Group, Meredith Corporation, and Blue Cross Blue Shield headquartered in the city. Other major corporations include Wells Fargo, ING, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, and Pioneer, to name a few.
The city was founded in the late 1840’s as Fort Des Moines, when Captain James Allen sanctioned a fort to be built at the merge of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. The fort continued to grow as a trading post and frontier city, and was incorporated into the state of Iowa in 1851.
The city is prone to flooding, and was the site of major flooding in 1993, when 250,000 people were left without running water or drinking water for close to three weeks, and again in 2008 when a major levee was breached.
Like most other cities in Iowa, the city boasts hot humid summers and cold winters, with average summer highs peaking around 85, and average lows bottoming out at around 60 degrees. Winters can be severe, with heavy snowfall throughout the season, and average highs hitting 38 degrees and average lows peaking around 20 degrees.
