Gresham is a city located in Multnomah County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Directly adjacent to Portland, Oregon’s largest city, Gresham is a major suburb of Portland and integrally connected to its larger neighbor to the west. Home to over 105,000 residents, Gresham sits firmly within the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in turn is home to over 2.3 million residents, making it one of the largest metro areas on the West Coast. Gresham’s proximity to the largest city in Oregon has helped its growth tremendously, and today Gresham is the fourth-largest city in the state.
Gresham was established as a rest stop for travelers heading to Portland. Originally known as Campground, Gresham’s location east of Portland, as well as the construction of several permanent buildings including a general store, a saloon and an inn made it a natural extension of Portland. As a post office was required for incorporation, residents of then-Campground established a post office and renamed the area Gresham, after the Postmaster General at the time. Though the post office was established in 1884, incorporation did not come until 1905. Today, Gresham is intermingled with east Portland, with many streets originating in the larger city flowing directly into the smaller, and businesses and residents of both cities interact and mix on a daily basis.
Like Portland, Gresham enjoys relatively mild summers and cold, rainy winters. Average highs during the summer only reach into the low-to-mid 80’s, though temperatures in the 90’s and above have been recorded sporadically over the years. During the winter months, snow is relatively uncommon at the lower elevations, including much of Gresham and Portland, though temperatures usually drop down into the mid-to-upper 40’s with lows in the upper 20’s and lower 30’s. Snow is relatively uncommon, though not unheard of, though it rains plenty during the winter months.
