Augusta is a small consolidated city located within the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area, which collects data on all cities and municipalities within Augusta and Richmond Counties. It’s also the principal city in the area, and has a population of a little over 100,000, with the entire statistical area having a population of just over 500,000.
The city was built on the location where local Native Americans used to cross the Savannah River, mainly due to its location on the fall line. The city was first founded by soldiers looking for a good location to defend against the Spanish and the French who might be attacking from Florida, and as such the city was born.
The city was named after Augusta, the Princess of Wales, and was actually the state capital from 1785 to 1795, alternating with Savannah.
The city is actually a typical Georgian city, temperature-wise, as the average high during the summer hovers around 90 degrees, while the low can drop to around 67, although colder temperatures have been experienced (rarely). During the winter, however, things tend to get cooler, with average highs reaching just under 60 degrees and the average low topping out at a whopping 34 degrees.
