Auto Transport Tips: Shipping ATV’s and 4-Wheelers
ATV’s and 4-wheelers are pretty much the same thing, so for the purposes of this article we’ll be using the term “ATV” and all its various conjugations. So. ATV’s. Like a motorcycle, but with four wheels, ATV’s are shipped much the same as motorcycles are in that they are generally crated before they are loaded onto the carrier truck. This is an important departure from standard auto transport services that haul vehicles on an open transport carrier.
Motorcycles, ATV’s and other vehicles like that are generally crated to protect both the vehicles themselves and other vehicles that are being shipped alongside them.
While normal cars and trucks can be driven onto the back of a special transport trailer and secured via block wedges and chains, motorcycles pose unique challenges in terms of making sure they go nowhere.
Not only that, but motorcycles and ATV’s expose their riders to the elements, which means that extra protection is required since there is so much of the vehicle exposed, particularly the engine. Crating is usually included in the price to ship an ATV, so you shouldn’t be running into any surprises or anything when it comes time to ship yours.
Your carrier will likely be hauling their loads either in an enclosed container or on a flatbed hauler, as even crated motorcycles won’t fit on a standard carrier. Some companies only ship motorcycles and their cousins; still others will haul anything that their trucks can fit, so finding one for you is best left up to your shipping company, as they know all the best shippers for each particular type of vehicle.
