Elgin is a city located primarily in Bastrop County, in the U.S. state of Texas, though portions of the city extend into neighboring Travis County. Home to over 8,100 residents, Elgin is a small suburb of Austin, the third-largest city in the state, and is a part of the larger Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area, also known as Greater Austin. Elgin has been settled since at least the early 1870’s, and was incorporated as a city in 1873, and by 1880 the railroad had brought many new residents to the area. Growth was fast at first, but began to slow down during the 20th century, though in the 21st it has since picked up. Elgin is known as the Brick Capital of the Southwest, as it is home to two brick companies that have been in business since the turn of the 20th century, of three that were originally located in the town. Elgin is also known as the Sausage Capital of Texas for its unique sausage.
