Knoxville is the third largest city in the state of Tennessee, behind Memphis and Nashville, and is the county seat of Knox County, and is also the largest city in East Tennessee. The estimated population as of July 2007 was over 183,000, and the city is the principal city in the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a combined population of over 1 million residents.
The city was first founded in 1786 by James White, a retired army man, and thanks to slavery the city attracted many farmers looking for a new way of life. The city expanded rapidly, but by the time of the Civil War the city was very anti-slavery, to the point that it opposed secession from the United States. The city was known for its anti-Confederacy antics and rebellion, and was devastated by its Confederate holders because of it.
Knoxville was very liberal after the war and supported the progressive movement during the early 1900’s; however, population growth declined during the 1950’s due to the manufacturing sector losing jobs to foreign businesses, as well as the Interstate Highway system making the railroad virtually obsolete. However, city planners have initiated a grand urban renewal project that is already in full swing.
The city is characterized by long summers and cool, short winters, and during the summer months the average high is typically right around 85 degrees. Overnight lows for the city stay right around 60 degrees, while in the winter temperatures drop considerably, with average highs staying around 33 degrees and the lows dropping well below freezing.
