Richmond is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. Home to over 103,000 residents, Richmond was first founded and incorporated in 1905, and grew slowly albeit steadily for years. Standard Oil set up in Richmond in the 1920’s, and Chevron still operates there today. Richmond grew into a major shipyard with outbreak of World War II, and was the most active shipyard in the United States; it was said that the workers at the yards could build a ship a month, remarkable turnaround time for vessels of war. After World War II ended, the shipyards began to decline, and the population of the city suffered as a result, coming to a head in the 1970’s; over the past thirty years, however, Richmond has revitalized its depleted downtown core, opened up new retail and industrial opportunities, and generally recovered from the crippling depression.

Richmond occupies a large area on the eastern coast of the San Francisco Bay, just north of Berkeley and a bit further north than Oakland. It actually borders the San Pablo Bay and San Francisco Bay, but what’s more interesting is the fact that there are two different interstate highways that run through Richmond, and actually converge in Berkeley further south. This makes it easier for carries to get to and from, which should help increase your pickup window.
Not only that, but it can also help your price. Carriers don’t like going further than they have to, and Richmond is a pretty good stopping point for carriers looking to go to the Bay Area.
