Punta Gorda is a city in as well as the county seat of Charlotte County, Florida. The city is currently home to a population of over 16,600 residents and sits as the only incorporated municipality in Charlotte County.
Punta Gorda also serves as a principal city of the Punta Gorda Metropolitan Statistical Area, home to over 159,000, and is also a part of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area, which is home to over 702,000 residents. The city sits about 50 miles southeast of Sarasota.
Punta Gorda was founded in the late 1800’s and was officially settled in 1882, though the name and area had been on maps available to Americans since the early 1850’s. Growth came from being included as the southernmost stop along the South Florida Railroad. Growth was slow but steady, and the city incorporated in 1887.
During the first half of the 20th century the city continued to expand thanks to land reclamation projects and also thanks to the growth of Fort Myers and Sarasota. After Hurricane Charley hit the city in 2004, revitalization efforts, as well as a focus on updating old buildings, has led to a renaissance in the city that is still ongoing.
During the summer months the city’s temperatures hit around 90 degrees during the day, with lows often dropping to around 74 degrees overnight. Temperatures, however, can and will get higher during certain days, and temperatures around triple digits are not uncommon during the summer months.
During the winter months, however, temperatures typically hit around 70 degrees during the day with lows often dropping to around 52 degrees overnight, making Punta Gorda a popular snowbird destination, which is good news if you need car transport services to Florida.
