Bakersfield is a city in the San Joaquin Valley and is actually in Kern County, California, located right in the middle between Los Angeles and Fresno. Home to over 347,000 residents in the city proper, Bakersfield is the 9th largest city in the state of California as well as the 52nd largest by population in the entire United States. Bakersfield is the principal city of the Bakersfield-Delano Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to over 839,000 residents.
Bakersfield was originally known as Kern Island to the few people who originally settled the area in 1860, though in 1869 the name was changed to Bakersfield after Colonel Thomas Baker. It was incorporated as a city in 1873 and in 1874 it replaced the old county seat, Havilah, as the county seat of Kern County.
It was hit by and earthquake in 1952, and while damage was severe it has been repaired and Bakersfield is thriving once again. Today, much of the city’s economy is based on service industries such as retail, though manufacturing and even agriculture are present in Bakersfield today.
During the summer months, average daily highs usually reach into the mid-to-upper 90’s, with temperatures over 100 degrees not entirely uncommon. Overnight, summer lows usually drop into the high 60’s or low 70’s. Winter temperatures are cooler, with average highs reaching into the mid-50’s during the day while overnight lows tend to drop down into the low-to-mid 40’s.
