Long Beach is a city located in Los Angeles County, in Southern California. The city is the seventh-largest in the state of California as well as the 36th largest city in the United States, and currently has a population of over 462,000 residents. Long Beach is the largest city in the United States that is not a county seat. Long Beach is the home of the Port of Long Beach, one of the world’s largest shipping ports and the largest import/export port on the West Coast in terms of pure volume.
The area that is now Long Beach has been inhabited for thousands of years, but only since the 1820’s have Americans been living in the region. Determining when the city was officially founded is rather difficult, but it was definitely incorporated as a city in 1897. Before the incorporation Long Beach was primarily agricultural, growing slowly as Los Angeles began to grow as well.
Today, Long Beach is an extension of Los Angeles, though it wasn’t until the mid 20th century that the city began to establish itself as a major seaside resort town instead of just a port, and today the city is well-known for not just its industry but tourism as well.
Average daily highs in Long Beach usually reach into the low-to-mid 80’s, avoiding some of the more brutal weather that California is known for thanks to its location on the Pacific Ocean.
Overnight, temperatures in the summer tend to drop into the low-to-mid 60s, making for pleasant evenings more often than not. During the winter months temperatures stay mild, with highs reaching into the mid-to-upper 60’s and overnight lows rarely dropping below 45 degrees or so.
