Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Alabama, is the second-largest city in the state and is also the capital of Alabama. Home to over 205,700 residents, Montgomery also anchors the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is home to over 374,000, making it the third-largest metro area in Alabama.
Montgomery is the home of Maxwell Air Force Base, which has a major effect on the city, as the military presence adds a lot of shopping potential; since Montgomery is a modern American city, it is not surprising that retail is one of its largest economic factors.
The city was actually conceived as a merger between two smaller towns in the area in 1819 and was renamed Montgomery after an American Revolution general. The area began to be settled during the early 1800’s, and Montgomery was incorporated in 1819.
During the Civil War, it served as the capital of the Confederate States of America before it was moved to Richmond, VA, in 1861. During the war itself, the city was mostly spared, thanks to its location and it no longer being the capital.
Though relatively unscathed, Alabama on the whole suffered severe infrastructural damage due to Sherman’s “Total War” campaign; it would last for decades, and the effects of it are still felt in many parts of the state today, though not as much in the larger cities anymore.
During the summer months, average daily highs in the upper 80’s and lower 90’s are not uncommon, though temperatures in the high 90’s are not uncommon. The record high in the summer is 107 degrees, set in the month of July; overnight lows in the city drop down into low 80’s during the summer.
During the winter snow is relatively uncommon, making Montgomery more popular for snowbirds as well as car shipping companies. Average winter highs tend to reach into the upper 50’s and lower 60’s; the record high in the winter is 85 degrees, set separately in December and February. Overnight lows often drop into the upper 40’s and low 50’s.
