Amarillo was founded in 1877 and was originally just a simple ranch located in the Texas desert. The settlement that was founded around it was originally called Oneida; it quickly became a hotspot for cattle shipping and the city grew up around the industry.
Amarillo was hit hard by the Dust Bowl, beginning in the early 1930’s, and the town suffered along with many other cities in the region. Residents of the town stayed, however, through the worst ravages of the Great Depression, and though it has taken a long time, today Amarillo is a vibrant and upbeat city with a positive atmosphere and a glowing economy.
Abilene sits in the desert of Texas; this generally means high temperatures during the day, and of course lower temperatures during the night. Average daily highs during the summer months tend to reach into the low-to-mid 90’s, while overnight lows tend to drop into the low 70’s.
During the winter months temperatures tend to drop, with average highs only reaching into the mid-to-upper 50’s during the day and close to freezing overnight.
