It was founded in 1849 when the US Army decided that the colony of Dona Ana needed an overflow area, and when the railroad came to the town in 1881 the city saw slow growth. It was incorporated in 1907 and New Mexico State University was founded in 1888, though the name wasn’t changed until 1858.
