Jackson is the state capital, largest city, and one of two county seats of Hinds County, Mississippi. According to a 2006 census estimate the city’s population was just over 176,000, and the five county Combined Metropolitan Area (of which Jackson is the major city) has a population just over 525,000, making the 88th largest Combined Metropolitan Statistical Area in the United States. The city is named after President Andrew Jackson.
The city was originally founded as Parkerville and was founded as a trading post along the Natchez Trading Route. In 1821, the Mississippi General Assembly sent three men to find a suitable place to settle a new town, and they came back with the location of Parkerville.
It was originally planned as a checkerboard pattern and was renamed after President Andrew Jackson in recognition of his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. The first rail lines in Jackson opened in 1840, and the city grew by leaps and bounds. It was one of the main manufacturing hubs for the Confederacy during the Civil War, and today there are few buildings or markers from this time, mainly due to the complete destruction at the hands of Union forces during the Siege of Jackson.
The city lies in a humid subtropical climate, which is characterized by long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Typically temperatures during the summer months hover around 90 degrees, with lows dipping around 70; in the winter, however, the temperature rarely exceeds 60 degrees, while lows dip down to around 38.
