Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and with a population of 700,000, making it the 17th largest city in the United States. However, this title is somewhat disputed, mainly due to the fact that voters decided to merge with Jefferson County and make one consolidated city/county hybrid. Despite the technicalities, the city is still the largest in the state of Kentucky.
It was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark, and was named after King Louis of France. It was mainly a fort town due to Indian activity on the frontier, but by the turn of the 19th century had become a small town with some shops and homes. Throughout the 19th century, river traffic boosted the cit, turning it into a powerhouse on the Ohio River and a center for trade and commerce.
It was a major stronghold for Union forces during the Civil War, and after the war became famous for the Kentucky Derby. Like most older cities, Louisville experienced a flight of people out of the urban centers and into suburbs, but (again, like most cities) urban renewal projects started in the early 1990\’s and continued into the 21st century has revitalized the urban sections of Louisville.
Like most cities in Kentucky, Louisville has a humid continental climate, classified by having four distinct seasons. During the summer months, high temperatures typically average around 90 degrees, while they drop during the night to around 66 degrees. During the winter months, it rarely gets above 45 degrees, and can drop significantly to just under freezing temperatures, with snowfall being fairly common in the heart of the season.
